Orbs, June 2010

This is a project I worked on in collaboration with Evan Chamberlain. We blew 9 glass orbs together over a time period of about two hours. The entire time his brainwave activity was being recorded. After the orbs had cooled, I inserted a microcontroller and a single white LED into each one which blinked according to the brainwave data collected while the particular orb was being crafted.

The LED blinked at a particular frequency every second. That frequency corresponded to the predominant brainwave frequency of Evan while he was blowing the orb. For example, at one second intervals 3 readings were taken from Evan two showing alpha brainwaves were the highest and the last that gamma waves were the highest. Since alpha waves are about 10Hz and gamma waves are about 75Hz the LED would flicker at 10z for two one second intervals and 75Hz for a one second interval followed by whatever was read next.
